I love sunny Sunday adventuring. Last weekend's Sunday adventure was based around a photo that a friend of mine posted the previous afternoon - of bacon peanut brittle. Once I got the idea of this snack into my head, I knew I had to try it....
We actually managed to get up and out the door at a decent hour, for once, and headed across town for a day filled with lots of walking around Stoke Newington. The sun was out, and it was not too cold, so we were finally able to abandon our winter coats for a few hours! In retrospect, this was probably not my wisest move, as by the time we got home, I was feeling rather chilly! I think I'm just going to have to face the fact that London is still in the midst of winter. Sigh.
Over in Dalston, Rita's Bar and Dining are currently running the kitchen at Birthdays, and that's where we headed for the bacon brittle. It's a modern, minimalist venue, which really reminds me of the types of brunch places you would find in the Dog Patch area of San Francisco, or even Portland. We only stayed for long enough to grab our sustenance for the day (which was long enough to have a little smooch and dance to Howlin' Wolf...and probably put everyone off their fried chicken and waffles) and spent the rest of the day trying not to break our teeth on said sustenance.
These little crunchy pieces of sweet and salty, caramely, bacony, peanut deliciousness had hints of rosemary and sesame, and I liked them a lot. That said, I was constantly cautious as although they were good, they were not good enough to sacrifice a tooth for.
With snacks in hand (and mouth) we walked over to Church Street, which is one of the main streets in Stoke Newington, lined with cafes, pubs, vintage shops, boutiques and lots of beautiful architecture.
After you have made your way down the long winding street, you reach Clissold Park. We had a wander around....*quack, quack*...
Loverboy made friends with this little fellow....
On our way back, we had a little look around Abney Park Cemetery Trust, which was full of really beautiful and ornate headstones - works of art in themselves - and unruly foliage.
A lovely afternoon spent with my sweetheart, exploring a part of town that I rarely venture to, but really should visit more often.
Be still my taste buds, that looks show-stoppingly awesome! Peanuts are a no-can-do for me, but I can eat almonds aplenty and find they sub fairly well for peanuts, so the next time I'm craving salty and sweet in the same go, I'm sooo making my own version of this scrumptious bark. Oooh, if you do end up making some, I'd love to see the end results (and also a recipe!) - I am positive that it would work well with any other nut - can you eat cashews? That could work well too. I really loved the rosemary and sesame seeds in it!

What a "strange" snack... that's a french who is talking... sugar and bacon..I love your both outfits! Sylvain has almost the same gabardine jacket but a short one.
ReplyDeleteHehehe! It's yummy! Kind of like how in America you can get bacon maple doughnuts (yum!) bacon chocolate is also delicious! I love the sweet and salty combination.

What a pleasant Sunday! We have a couple of friends who live in Stoke Newington. Only went to a couple of pubs there in 2011 but this definitely makes me want to explore the area more ;-)

Thanks so much for your comment Heidi! I am actually always uncertain about my eyebrows, as I only started penciling them in within the past year, and never think I do a very good job! I use a blonde pencil (I think from number 7) to colour in the brow, and then brush it through with the comb on the other end of the pencil. I also sometimes add a reddish brow powder by MAC over the top, using a slanted brush. I hope this helps! :)

I LOVE bacon and I LOVE candy but never the twain shall meet in my book...I'm a weirdo an American who doesn't want bacon on/in everything (Denny's Restaurant was offering bacon milkshakes!!!!!). I want to go to London so badly, but only when it isn't freezing; it looks so wonderful - especially that cemetery!
ReplyDeleteI don't think I would go so far as to order a bacon milkshake (chocolate malt all the way!) but you should definitely go over to the dark side and try some chocolate with bacon bits in it! The sweet and salty works surprisingly well. There is also a place in SF that makes bacon maple doughnuts and they are very yummy! Come visit London when it gets warmer! I will be your personal tour guide! :)
