From Palm trees & Pineapples to PJs & Pancakes

Boo it's cold and a little bit snowy again.  Hard to believe that on Saturday I was transported to a Tiki oasis, complete with palm trees and pineapples (even if they were made of paper)....and today, it's back to wearing boots and my furry hat.  I'm definitely ready for Spring to...spring.

But back to Saturday...loverboy and I went along to a Hawaiian themed birthday party, with live music from the Union Canal String Band (featuring the birthday boy on bass!) and the Piccadilly Bullfrogs.  DJs The Big Kahuna and Moose also kept everyone dancing throughout the evening.

It was the first time that I have had the chance to see the Union Canal String Band, and I must say, I really enjoyed them!  As the name suggests, the band features all string instruments, and their style is very country bluegrass, with a bit of a rockabilly edge.

A little dancing, a little chatting, good friends, a hint of Hawaii and hey presto - a super fun Saturday night!

Now, you may be aware that this week plays host to not one, but TWO fun annual festivities, which are both firmly marked on my calendar.  Valentine's Day is approaching this Thursday, but first things first, today is Pancake Day (or if we're going to be technical, 'Shrove Tuesday').  In honor of both, I got a head start on the festivities and lovingly made a pancake brunch on Sunday.

I opted for American-style pancakes, and made two kinds: savoury, with cheddar cheese and spring onions, and sweet with blueberries and bananas.  Yummmmmerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrssssss!

I felt like a domestic goddess, taking to the frying pan whilst still in my pjs, and whipping up a batch of warm, fluffy pancakes, as sustenance for an otherwise lazy day.

Now whilst this yummy turn of events does not necessarily assist me on my pre-Viva Las Vegas healthy diet, that does not mean that I shall be refraining from pancakes today.  After all today is pancake day - so it would be rude not to partake.

Tonight's cakes du pan will be more of the traditional English style, i.e. crêpes.  Again, we will go for a mix of savoury, with ricotta and spinach, and some sweet, with apricot jam.

Funnily enough (to me), it appears that one of my most read blog posts, which has had a resurgence in the past couple of weeks (according to my stats), is one that I wrote for Pancake Day 2011...very random that out of all my posts, this one seems to get read the most, but reminds me that I must revisit those chocolate pancakes....

Happy flipping!

  1. One definitely needs to chop into a few pancakes in celebration of Shrove Tuesday. I'll be whipping up a GF batch (I'm thinking I'll toss in strawberries and mini chocolate chips to give them a Valentine's Day vibe, too) later on today.

I adore your outfit here! You look so pretty and party perfect. That fuchsia shrug is marvelous! I have a fitted cardigan in a similar hue and love to wear it with a purple (70s does 40s) jersey dress of mine in particular.

Wishing you a marvelous Pancake Day!!!

    1. Yum strawberry and chocolate pancakes! I hope they turned out delicious! :)

Thanks you - I love this cardigan, and bought it for a bargain price whilst I was in Seattle last summer, to wear to my sister-in-law's wedding!

  2. Wow! What an awesome looking party! Looks like you had a blast.
Very jealous of your pancakes also. Our kitchen is a vile state right now (damn mucky students...) so I was going to avoid it at all costs, but goshdarnit pancakes with banana is my absolute favourite! You've made me very hungry!
Hope you have a lovely valentines! x

    1. Oh no! I hope that you were able to battle the messy kitchen and go forth to whip up some pancakes! I mean, if you can't have pancakes on pancake day, then when can you?! :)

  3. What a fun party! Nothing better to take your mindoff of the cold weather like good music and good friends. I love pancakes but you can't have them everyday for breakfast without consequences.

    1. Agreed on both counts! I have indulged in pancakes on two occasions in less than a week, so it will be quite a while before I have any again, as I would rather not have to deal with the consequences! :)

  4. I've never heard of Pancake Day! Over here it's Mardi Gras, and in our relatively Polish neighborhood, we've discovered it's also called Punchki Day (for a Polish pastry). That party looks delightful, and what a perfect time of year for a tiki party to brighten up the dreary cold weather!

    1. Yes, it's called Pancake Day (but really Shrove Tuesday) because the day before Ash Wednesday is when everyone would use up all the goodies in their cupboards to make pancakes, before giving up all the yummy food for 40 days of Lent! I haven't heard it called Mardi Gras, but have heard people in the USA refer to the day as 'Fat Tuesday'! Doesn't have quite the same ring as Pancake Day hahahahha! :)
