There's a new diner in town, and it's a good one! Stax Diner has been open for a week now and is located on the first floor of Kingly Court, just off Carnaby Street in Central London.
We had some American friends in town earlier this week, so naturally during their brief time in London, we dragged them to get....American food!
I had been dreaming of chicken and waffles all day, however, the restaurant underestimated how popular they would be, and had run out of chicken (and bacon) by the time we arrived. Sad face. Instead, I got a burger (woe is me) and we shared one of each of the sides - apart from the deep fried pickles, as they had also run out of those.
As it was the soft launch, all food was half price, so this was the time to try as much of the menu as possible. The popcorn shrimp was standout and the chips were perfect. Green tomatoes and lettuce dipped in Ranch dressing are also strangely satisfying, if you want to add a little roughage to your meal...
The burgers were delicious and perfectly cooked. Loverboy has said that they are the best burgers he has had in London so far - high praise for the newest eatery on the block!
The dessert was pretty good, although I wasn't blown away by it. I despaired that they served one pud (the 'Duffin Sundae') in a coffee cup, and the 'Dough-Bro' in a basket with greaseproof paper. For the love of all things sweet, why would you serve ice cream in a basket? They need to invest in some glass dishes for their desserts, and then they will be on the right track.
The venue is pretty tiny, but they manage to fit quite a lot of people in, and the staff are friendly and helpful. Kingly Court is the perfect location on a warm summer's night, as it's enclosed away from traffic, and has lots of bars and restaurants with outdoor seating, so there is a real buzz within those four walls. You can also walk off your burgers with a stroll through Carnaby Street and Soho afterwards...
Minor issues aside, the food is top notch, and I will definitely be back to try the chicken and waffles!!! Stax are open for lunch and dinner, and you will also soon be able to visit them for brunch on the weekends.
Check out the drum kit hanging from the ceiling in the back!
The menus double as fans - especially handy if the thought of fried chicken gets you a little hot under the collar!

Feed your soul and ask them to fry you up some green tomatoes!
Yeaaaaaah those were some good burgers!

Is that a corn dog covered in ice cream? No, it's a chocolate brownie encased in a doughnut...on a stick!

Awesome post Melanie! I'm looking forward to our return to Stax; I just hope they play some Otis Redding. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks babes! I just hope they have the chicken and waffles next time! :P
DeleteOoooh!! Maybe we might have to go here when Alan and I come to London on the 5th!! Let's hope they have the chicken then :)
ReplyDeleteYou should! They have a lot of yummy food...maybe we can all go to brunch together? xx
DeleteLooks pretty good!! I went to Honest Burger recently with the good wife. Thought it was pretty awesome. This place looks top notch.. And the theme.. I like! Mind you, I reckon this menu has serious calories.. but hey, it's 'Soul Food', right? Nice post....
ReplyDeleteOh, I've heard a lot of good things about Honest Burger...I haven't tried their food yet, but I think that will be next on the list! :)
DeleteLooks like a cute place! Always so many new things popping up over there and I forget how much there is off Carnaby Street. I'll start my research now to find the most expensive wine in London so we can beat last year. LOL! Looking like we'll most likely be there around the last week of October :)
ReplyDeleteBwahahhahahahahhahahhahaha!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D That did make me laugh! Yeah, at least if we get expensive wine, let it be in some seriously fancy surroundings!
DeleteWe are going to Paris for a weekend towards the end of October...I hope your trip doesn't coincide with that!!!!
I like a pudding but that dough- bro looks tough going! I like the look of the place and the burgers sound really good!
ReplyDeleteI had a bite of the dough-bro and it was pretty intense!!!
